Dr. John D. Lipani provides neurosurgery in New Jersey and offers subdural hematoma treatment for patients. Dr. Lipani has the necessary knowledge and expertise to help provide patients with a speedy response and optimal recovery when it comes to subdural hematoma treatment.

A subdural hematoma is a collection of blood on the surface of the brain as a result of a head injury, hypertension or brain tumor. This collection of blood can compress the brain tissue and cause life-threatening complications resulting in a possible stroke or permanent loss of brain function. Subdural hematomas can also occur after a minor head injury, especially in the elderly. In these cases, the condition may go unnoticed for many days or weeks.

The following can increase your risk for a subdural hematoma:

  • Blood thinners
  • Long-term alcohol abuse
  • Recurrent falls
  • Repeated head injury
  • Very young or very old age

Common subdural hematoma symptoms include weakness on one side of the body involving either the arm, leg or both. A brain imaging study may be ordered if you are experiencing confused speech, difficulty with balance, numbness or weakness. A CT scan or MRI scan would likely be done to evaluate the presence of a subdural hematoma.

Acute subdural hematomas present the greatest challenge, with high rates of death and injury. Subacute and chronic subdural hematomas have more positive outcomes in most cases, with symptoms often improving after the blood is drained. Sometimes a period of rehabilitation is necessary to assist the patient back to his or her usual level of functioning.

Because subdural hematomas are an emergency condition, emergency subdural hematoma surgery may be necessary to reduce pressure within the brain. The subdural hematoma procedure associated with this condition may involve drilling a small hole in the skull to allow for blood to drain and relieve pressure on the brain. Larger hematomas or solid blood clots may need to be removed through a craniotomy, which creates a larger opening in the skull. Once Dr. Lipani has access to the brain, he can then work to correct the offending problem.
