Dr. John D. Lipani is a board-certified, fellowship-trained neurosurgeon who practices neurosurgery in New Jersey. As a leading expert in both surgical brain and spine procedures, as well as in non-invasive or knifeless brain and spine radiosurgery, Dr. Lipani offers his patients a unique variety of treatment options best suited to their individual needs.

Radiculopathy is a condition caused by irriation (such as compression due to a disc herniation) to a nerve in the spine that can cause numbness, pain or weakness along the course of the nerve. This condition can occur in any part of the spine, but cervical (neck) radiculopathy and lumbar (low back) radiculopathy are most common.

A common cause of radiculopathy is disc herniation. Radiculopathy symptoms may be experienced in the arms or legs, depending on the location of the injured nerve. Patients involved in heavy labor, in contact sports or who have a family history of the condition are more prone to develop radiculopathy. Additionally, a tumor or infection can injure or compress the exiting nerve, causing inflammation or degeneration, which can lead to radiculopathy symptoms as well.

The diagnosis of radiculopathy starts with a review of the patient’s medical history and a physical examination. Dr. Lipani will ask you questions about the type and location of your symptoms, as well as how long you have been experiencing pain. By identifying the exact location of your pain, Dr. Lipani will be able to localize the nerve that is responsible.

Radiculopathy surgery is usually recommended when non-surgical therapies fail or when weakness increases, causing pain or incapacitation. If a patient experiences any weakness or sensory loss, Dr. Lipani may recommend surgery to prevent any permanent neurological issues. This option also tends to result in a more complete radiculopathy recovery.
