Damage to any part of the spinal cord or nerves at the end of the spinal canal often causes changes in strength, sensation and other body functions. Spinal cord injury commonly results from traumatic impact that compresses or crushes the delicate spinal cord tissue, and sustained injuries are often irreversible.

Spinal cord injury symptoms vary according to the degree of damage caused to the spinal cord. In extreme cases, paralysis can occur below the level of injury. Spinal cord injury complications include:

  • Loss of movement
  • Exaggerated reflex activities or spasms
  • Loss of bowel or bladder control
  • Changes in sexual function, sexual sensitivity and fertility
  • Loss of sensation, including the ability to feel heat, cold and touch
  • Pain or powerful stinging sensation caused by damage to the nerve fibers in the spinal cord
  • Difficulty breathing or coughing

Spinal cord injury treatment is usually focused on decompressing the spinal cord and stabilizing the spinal column. Any form of spinal cord injury warrants immediate neurosurgical evaluation. In many cases, surgery is necessary to remove bone fragments, foreign objects, herniated discs or fractured vertebrae. In addition, surgery may also be used to stabilize the spine to prevent future injury or deformity.

Although a spinal cord injury may result in permanent injury, the goal of treatment is to preserve residual spinal cord function and allow patients to achieve their best possible outcome with post-operative physical therapy.
