Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery (MIS)

Dr. John D. Lipani is a board-certified, fellowship-trained neurosurgeon who practices state-of-the-art neurosurgery in New Jersey. Dr. Lipani specializes in complex and minimally invasive spine surgery. Dr. Lipani spent several years at the Delaware Valley Regional Spinal Cord Injury Center at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia, one of the nation's 16 centers of excellence for spinal disorders and participated in the combined neurosurgical and orthopedic spine fellowship program. He also completed a fellowship at NYU Medical Center in neurosurgery with a focus on complex and minimally invasive spinal surgery, which remains a significant part of his current practice.

Spine surgery is traditionally performed as an open surgical procedure involving a relatively large incision that allows the surgeon to directly visualize and access the spine and neural elements. However, recent developments and technological advances have allowed some spine conditions to be treated with minimally-invasive surgery techniques.

The general goal of minimally-invasive spine surgery is to achieve the same objectives of open spine surgery with minimal incisions and less disruption to subcutaneous tissues. This minimally invasive surgery(MIS) technique allows patients to recover more quickly from surgery and with minimal post-surgical discomfort. In addition, some minimally-invasive spine surgeries are performed as outpatient procedures and utilize only local anesthesia.

After the surgery, some patients may be discharged on the same day, while others may require a 1-3 day hospital stay. Physical therapy may be recommended to speed up recovery time and help regain strength.

Not all surgery can or should be performed using minimally invasive Surgery (MIS) techniques. In certain cases, open exposure to the spinal column and surrounding neural elements, such as the spinal cord and nerve roots, is necessary to achieve a safe and effective operative goal. Dr. Lipani will discuss both open operative spine surgery as well as minimally-invasive spine surgery options in an effort to allow patients to achieve the best results.
