Hydrocephalus Treatment

When it comes to practicing state-of-the-art neurosurgery in New Jersey, Dr. John D. Lipani offers many services, including hydrocephalus treatment. Sometimes referred to as “water on the brain,” hydrocephalus is a medical condition in which there is an abnormal accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid in the cavities of the brain. Usually found in infants and the elderly, this condition of additional fluid places increased pressure on the brain, which may negatively effect brain function. Dr. Lipani has the knowledge and expertise to diagnose this condition and offer a definitive solution.

Hydrocephalus may result from a congenital malformation or it may be caused by a serious head injury. In other cases, it may develop from complications of an aging brain. Hydrocephalus is generally described as communicating hydrocephalus or non-communicating hydrocephalus (AKA obstructive hydrocephalus). These two distinctions refer to whether the increased pressure is evenly distributed throughout the ventricular compartment that contains the increased fluid collection (non-communicating or obstructive hydrocephalus). In addition, there is a condition known as normal pressure hydrocephalus, in which the pressure within the ventricles is normal, but the compliance of brain tissue around the ventricles is reduced. This condition is normally found in the elderly population. Hydrocephalus symptoms vary for each specific type of hydrocephalus, but they generally include the following:

  • Headache
  • Vomiting and nausea
  • Papilledema
  • Blurred or double vision
  • Problems with balance or poor coordination
  • Urinary incontinence
  • Lethargy
  • Drowsiness
  • Changes in personality
  • Memory loss

When it comes to hydrocephalus treatment, surgery is often performed to place a ventriculoperitoneal shunt in one of the ventricles of the brain. A ventriculoperitoneal shunt allows excess cerebrospinal fluid to drain into the abdominal cavity. Another surgical remedy for hydrocephalus is a third ventriculostomy. This is a procedure in which the neurosurgeon opens a window through the ventricular system to allow fluid to escape into the basal cisterns. Dr. Lipani has the knowledge, experience and expertise to correctly diagnose and treat hydrocephalus. Dr. Lipani's pledge is to preserve brain function and allow patients to maintain a healthy quality of life.
