Dr. John D. Lipani is dedicated to helping patients maintain healthy brain and spine function by performing state-of-the-art neurosurgery in New Jersey. Dr. Lipani's advanced treatment options allow him to provide his patients with several treatment options, including surgery and radiosurgery procedures for pituitary adenomas.

Pituitary adenomas are abnormal growths that develop within the pituitary gland and may affect hormone production throughout the body. Most pituitary adenomas are benign, slow growing and occur spontaneously.

Pituitary adenoma symptoms include:

  • Headache
  • Vision loss
  • Seizures
  • Low blood pressure
  • Weakness
  • Fatigue
  • Weight gain or loss
  • Nausea and vomiting

Pituitary hormone function testing is necessary for every patient with a pituitary tumor. This blood test can confirm a functional adenoma, while determining if there is evidence of pituitary insufficiency. Most often, an MRI is used to detect the exact size and location of pituitary adenomas.

Pituitary adenoma treatment depends on hormone production by the tumor, the tumor’s size, the extent that the tumor invaded its surrounding structures and the patient’s general health. Although some hormone-producing pituitary adenomas can be treated medically, pituitary adenoma surgery is the most common form of pituitary adenoma treatment. Pituitary adenoma surgery involves removing the entire tumor through either the nose or through the top of the skull, depending on the size and location of the tumor. Endoscopy and image guidance allows these procedures to be performed effectively, with shorter recoveries, less scarring and a lower risk of complications. Radiosurgery is another option for pituitary adenoma treatment and can also be used if a tumor recurs after surgery or if patients are too sick to undergo surgery.

After surgery, most patients will stay in the hospital for one to two days before returning home. Although many patients experience mild discomfort or a headache after surgery, this can be managed with over-the-counter medications.
