Meningiomas are tumors that originate from the meninges, or the thin layer of tissue covering the brain and spinal cord. These tumors, mainly found near the top and the outer curve of the brain, may also form at the base of the skull. Meningiomas cause harm to the brain because as they grow, they put pressure on the brain or spinal cord tissue.
About 90% of meningiomas are categorized as benign tumors, while the remaining 10% are categorized as atypical or malignant. Depending on the tumor type, some contain sacs of fluid, mineral deposits or tightly packed bunches of blood vessels. Meningiomas are most likely to be found in adults older than 60. Fortunately, the majority of these tumors do not spread to other areas of the body. The following is a list of meningioma symptoms:
Meningiomas can be detected using MRI and/or a CT scan prior to treatment. Meningioma treatment includes surgery and radiosurgery. The goal of meningioma surgery is to remove as much of the meningioma as possible while the radiosurgery is used to stop the remaining cells from growing. Alternatively, in some cases, radiosurgery alone may be used to definitively treat meningiomas. For a small meningioma that does not cause any significant signs or symptoms, monitoring the tumor without any immediate meningioma treatment may be an option.
