Osteomas are benign, slow growing and usually asymptomatic bony growths commonly found in the head and neck. They may be identified as masses or as the underlying cause of sinusitis or mucocele formation. Patients with Gardner’s syndrome may present with the common triad of multiple cranial osteomas, colonic polyposis and soft tissue tumors.

When osteoma symptoms are present, they vary according to the osteoma’s location within the head and neck, and they are usually related to compression of the cranial nerves. Disturbances in vision and hearing and cranial nerve palsies are common in those who have an osteoma. A simple skull x-ray or CT scan can be used to diagnose an osteoma. Bone scans may also be used to confirm diagnosis.

Asymptomatic osteomas may simply be monitored. Osteoma surgery may be considered for cosmetic reasons or if pressure on adjacent tissue becomes a problem. Osteomas of the skull base may be approached directly using the endoscopic endonasal approach. This is a minimally invasive approach that allows surgeons to access the tumor through the natural corridor of the nose, without making an open incision.
